As its name states, this plant has square stems and opposite leaves. A member of the aster family, plants can be pinched at around 2 feet; otherwise, the plant will tend to become leggy. Reseeds easily. It provides nectar to numerous insects and is a larval host to the Florida White Butterfly. As a wildflower, this plant is salt tolerant and adaptable to differences in soil pH. Almost weedy. Remove seed heads if you want to control spread.
