October and November bring a cloud of reddish-purple cotton candy-colored flowers. Also known as sweetgrass, the Gullah people of the Southeast have been known to use this plant to make their famous woven baskets. This plant is in decline due to habitat destruction and overharvesting. While drought-resistant once established, this plant grows well with regular water. A good addition to a fall garden, it is resistant to browsing by deer.
